Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi is top economic -


a wise choice of tyres cuts fuel costs


and environmental impacts



The time to change to winter tyres will soon be here. Most drivers assume that winter tyres increase the car’s fuel consumption. This truth may come as a positive surprise to many consumers: the new generation of Nordic winter tyres roll fluently, save fuel and generate less harmful CO2 emissions than summer tyres. Several test results indicate that Hakkapeliitta tyres have the most economic rolling properties. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi, the studless winter tyre designed for northern conditions, tops the winners lists.

The rolling resistance of the tyre has environmental impacts throughout the tyre’s useful life. Light rolling corresponds to lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Rolling resistance means the energy consumed in the deformation that takes place when the tyre grips the road. This deformation and the amount of energy it requires can be regulated with structural and material choices in tyre design and construction.

A wise choice of tyres saves the environment and money


Rolling resistance is measured in terms of a rolling resistance coefficient; the greater the coefficient, the heavier the tyre rolls. The average rolling resistance value for contemporary tyres varies between 1-1.2.

The rolling resistance of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi is clearly below 0.9, which is absolutely top value on the market. For example, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi in the popular 205/55 R 16 size is up to 36% ahead of its competitors with the heaviest rolling resistance.

A nearly 40% difference in rolling resistance transforms into an approximately 6% difference in fuel consumption. Thus the tyre can save both the environment and money. With the current fuel prices, a tyre with a more economic rolling resistance can save nearly 300 euro over 40,000 km of driving. A wise choice of tyres and a careful driving style also helps to significantly reduce the CO2 emissions generated while driving.

The leading Russian car magazine Za Rulem addressed rolling resistance by comparing the fuel economics of tyres. They tested both studded and non-studded tyres, a total of 19 different models, on a test track. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi was the best non-studded tyre in this respect. The most economical studded tyre was the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5.

With both Hakkapeliitta tyres, the fuel consumption at an even speed of 90 km/h was 5.5 litres per one hundred kilometres. The Hakkapeliitta tyres consumed 5.5% less fuel than the tyre with the poorest rolling resistance in the test (Za Rulem, 9/2007).
