NOKIAN TYRES ENHANCES LOGISTICS IN THE MOSCOW REGION

Nokian Tyres looks to enhance and boost its logistics operations in the Moscow region. The company has leased a warehouse in the Orehovo-Zuevo region, 70 kilometres east of Moscow. The warehouse covers some 7,500 square metres and has a capacity to store approx. 350,000 tyres.

Nokian Tyres plans to develop its new warehouse into a logistics centre offering flexible service to its customers and distribution. “The facilities will also be used for other than product storage purposes. We will launch winter tyre studding in March-April and installations for the car dealers will start later this year. We are also looking into the possibility of establishing a retreading plant,” says Kari-Pekka Laaksonen, Vice President, Logistics and Purchasing.

Aiming at increasingly better customer service

Nokian-brand tyres made in Finland are delivered by train to the Orehovo-Zuevo logistics centre and from there directly to customers in Moscow. In its early phases, the centre will also serve as a cash-and-carry outlet where customers can pick up the tyres they have ordered. In the future, tyre deliveries will be further enhanced, the goal being to develop the Moscow logistics centre into a unit responsible for distribution in the entire region.

Nokian Tyres has outsourced the centre’s warehousing, installation and studding services. Its partner is a subsidiary of a Russian company specialised in logistics. The employees of the warehouse are Russians. The lease agreement made for the warehouse facilities is of a long-term nature. The growth of the Russian tyre market is likely to lead to an expansion of the logistics centre in a few years. There is still space around the current warehouse, so the centre can be expanded to accommodate growing delivery volumes.

Nokian Tyres has another tyre distribution outlet in the St. Petersburg region. It will be developed into an efficient logistics centre to serve customers in St. Petersburg, as well as the company’s own plant, which is to come on stream in the Vsevolozshki area in St. Petersburg in 2005.
