Nokian Tyres published its Corporate Sustainability Report for 2015

Nokian Tyres plc has published its Corporate Sustainability Report for 2015. The Corporate Sustainability Report is available in Finnish and English on the company’s website at www.nokiantyres.com/company/sustainability/.

The report is based on the international, widely adopted GRI G4 guidelines that divide sustainability into three main groups (financial, environmental and social sustainability and their different subgroups). The presently published report is the third GRI report from Nokian Tyres and, in the interests of quality assurance, it has now been externally assured for the first time.

In February 2016, Nokian Tyres’ President and CEO Ari Lehtoranta explained in a newspaper interview that the company’s internal inspection activities have revealed problems related to magazine testing practices.
– Last year, product development was one of the targets for internal audits. The investigations revealed flaws in our magazine testing practices. When the results were confirmed, we wanted to take responsibility and came out with the findings in early 2016. We apologised for not having acted in line with our principles in the past. Transparency and sustainability offer the best starting points for the development of our company, says Ari Lehtoranta, President and CEO for Nokian Tyres, in the Corporate Sustainability Report for 2015.

The report explains the sustainability processes at Nokian Tyres. The Corporate Sustainability website also includes the company’s test tyre policy www.nokiantyres.com/company/sustainability/world-on-wheels/test-tyre-policy.

Updating the test tyre policy is a part of Nokian Tyres’ sustainability work which was developed during the reporting period: the new Corporate Sustainability workgroup that started in April 2015 has launched more than 50 different sustainability related projects that will last until 2017.

The company also joined external projects promoting sustainability during the fiscal period. The Responsible Care programme for the chemical industry covers all business activities related to sustainable development. In December 2015, Nokian Tyres signed the UN’s Global Compact initiative and registered as a supporting member for the initiative. The company also participates in the sustainable development initiative for natural rubber (SNR-i, IRSG) that aims to promote sustainable development for natural rubber at all stages of the supply chain and to promote commitment towards the common goals among all the suppliers in the chain.

– We are working harder than ever in order to improve trust and to develop our activities across the entire field of sustainability. In addition to setting an example ourselves, we want to use all available means to make the entire industry more transparent, says President and CEO Lehtoranta.
