Nokian Tyres recognized for its leadership in climate change mitigation – Received an A- in CDP's 2022 report

Nokian Tyres achieved an A- score by CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project) in the Climate Change sector for its actions aimed at decreasing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate risks. The annual CDP report is deemed one of the most trusted indicators for performance on corporate climate change mitigation. Scores A and A- represent leadership level.
“We want to show sustainability leadership in tire industry and have ambitious targets. The greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) from Nokian Tyres' tire production in relation to turnover and production tons were again clearly the lowest of the companies that have tire industry as their main industry in the CDP reports. We are proud to receive this recognition of our work to fight climate change," says Teppo Huovila, Vice President, Quality and Sustainability.
In early 2023, Nokian Tyres will begin the construction of the first zero CO2 emission factory in the tire industry in Romania. Nokian Tyres was also the first tire company to have its Science Based Targets for decreasing CO2 emissions officially approved.
CDP is a global non-profit organization that runs the world’s environmental disclosure system for companies, cities, states and regions on environmental transparency and action on environmental questions. CDP scores companies from D- to A based on the comprehensiveness and transparency of disclosure, awareness and management of environmental risks, and demonstration of best practices associated with environmental leadership.
This year, nearly 20 000 organizations around the world participated in the CDP assessment by disclosing data on their environmental impacts, risks and opportunities. Nokian Tyres’ score reflects its commitment in environmental sustainability.
Nokian Tyres is committed to promote sustainable practices in the industry
In addition to Nokian Tyres’ ambitious targets to reduce emissions, the company aims to increase the share of either recycled or renewable raw materials in its tires to 50% by 2030. Furthermore, to improve fuel efficiency, the rolling resistance of Nokian Tyres’ tires has been reduced by 8.5% on average compared to year 2013. This equals to the exhaust fumes of 65,000 cars annually.
The company is also committed to the UN Global Compact. As a member of the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR), Nokian Tyres is committed to a shared responsibility towards improving the social, environmental and economic sustainability of the global natural rubber value chain.
