Nokian winter tyres are the test winners, new Nokian WR SUV 3 high-performance winter tyre for harsh winter conditions completes the WR tyre range

In the winter tyre tests of key German car magazines, Nokian winter tyres were winners in 2012

Nokian: large, expanded winter tyre range from the inventor of the winter tyre
Nokian winter tyres were the winner of the 2012 winter tyre tests of key German car magazines like "Auto Bild", "auto motor sport" and "AUTOStraßenverkehr" and were declared best winter tyre. The test winners from the world's leading winter tyre specialist, Nokian Tyres from Finland, received top ratings of "exemplary", "highly recommended" and "very good", thus proving their excellent driving safety and their low fuel consumption.

Nokian tyres had over 20 test wins in the winter tyre tests in car magazines in Germany and Europe last winter. They came first in over half of the tests. German automobile association ADAC and consumer protection organization "test Stiftung Warentest" gave the premium-brand tyres the top rating of "good". Nokian winter tyres were also test winners in the 2011 winter tyre tests. In 97 test reports from autumn 2011 to spring 2013, Nokian tyres were test winners 54 times of all and rated good 43 times.

New for this winter is the rugged, high-performance winter tyre Nokian WR SUV 3, with ultimate snow grip thanks to snow claws, for all-round use on SUVs.

As the inventor of the winter tyre, Nokian offers a wide winter tyre range. The Nokian WR winter tyre for cars is available from tyre retailers in 85 sizes, from 13 to 20 inches, for speed classes T to W (190 – 270 km/h). There are now also five new sizes of the WR D3 and ten new sizes of the WR A3. The WR winter tyres have been developed specifically for European weather and the high speeds driven on European motorways.

This is how you find the best tyres: The brand should be the test winner in the most prestigious tyre tests. Very good, independent test results for a tyre are a rational basis for decision making when buying tyres.

New Nokian WR SUV 3: ultimate snow and slush performance

The Nokian WR SUV 3 feels at home in the varying European winter conditions, and it has excellent winter grip and driving response for SUVs. Its Snow Claws cling firmly into the snow. The Nokian SUV winter tyre resists effectively slush planing and aquaplaning and reliably masters all of the surprises that winter has in store. It rolls lightly and retains its balance on snow, slush, and dry roads alike.
The comprehensive selection of 39 products includes rim sizes from 15 inches to 21 inches, covering both smaller and larger SUVs.

Nokian WR: outstanding performance on snow, shortest braking distances, exemplary handling qualities, low fuel consumption

“Auto Bild” praises the Nokian WR A3: “Strengths: exemplary handling qualities on snowy, wet and dry surfaces, stable directional control and precise steering response, shortest wet and dry braking distances, low fuel consumption”. The “auto motor sport” assessment for the Nokian WR D3 is: “Outstanding performance on snow, short braking distance on dry surfaces, balanced handling”. In its test, ADAC writes the following about the Nokian WR D3 winter tyre: “Strengths: very well-balanced tyre, good on snow” as well as “good” “on a high level”. “test Stiftung Warentest” recommends it in its column “Our Advice”. The shortest braking distance of all tyres on a wet surface and on a dry surface, and a score of 99 out of 100 on snow for the Finnish tyre demonstrate its high quality.

Driving Safety Indicator (DSI) with the unique snowflake symbol, the Winter Safety Indicator, provides more safety

Nokian improves its tyres even further with unique innovations. The Nokian Driving Safety Indicator (DSI) with the unique snowflake symbol, the Winter Safety Indicator, on Nokian WR winter tyre simply shows the driver the groove depth as a number from 8 to 4 millimetres. The snowflake stays visible down to 4 millimetres. When it disappears the risk increases and the winter tyres should be replaced. No other tyre manufacturer has these patented innovations.

Nokian WR D3: Slush Blower against aquaplaning and slush planing

Studies have shown that slush is even more dangerous for drivers than ice or aquaplaning. The risk of fatal accidents is more than four times as high on slush than on dry surfaces. Melting snow, a layer of water on the road surface and possibly also ice form a combination that makes driving very difficult even for experienced drivers.

The Nokian WR D3 has a directional tread pattern with new solutions to actively prevent slush planing. "We further enhanced the tyre's resistance against aquaplaning and slush planing by applying a slanting, staggered front edge of tread blocks. This new innovation is called Slush Blower, because it actually blows water and slush away from the tyre grooves. The polished grooves also speed up the removal flow of water and slush, explains Nokian Tyres Product Development Manager Juha Pirhonen.

The Nordic premium brand has great expertise in slush tests and also conducts tests on natural ice at great expense. No other tyre manufacturer carries out tests on slush or natural ice as part of the development process. Nokian tyres offer optimum safety on snow, ice, slush, wet and dry surfaces thanks to ultra-tough testing. This is why their test results in the magazine test reports are so outstanding.

New Nokian Hakkapeliitta Winter Tyres for demanding conditions

Nokian is also presenting new winter tyres for the most severe weather conditions. The new generation of Nokian Hakkapeliitta winter tyres – the most famous winter tyres in the world. Nokian Hakkapeliitta winter tyres are highly regarded in Scandinavia and Russia as they are designed for the harsh Nordic winter. In Central and Eastern Europe they are the best option in regions with lots of snow, ice and slush, and they are now available from the tyre dealers in these regions too.

The new Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 beats even the most extreme weather conditions. With millions of diamond-hard crystals in the rubber compound, it literally bites into snow and ice. The safest, most convenient and reliable of Nokian winter tyres without spikes is also the greenest, with super low rolling resistance, low fuel consumption and high mileage.

For SUVs there is now the new Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 SUV, with Nordic convenience and maximum stability. It combines the strongest winter grip with precise, pleasurable handling and also uses innovations such as diamond-hard crystals.

The studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 masters all the elements of winter. Unique stud technology from the inventor of winter tyres brings grip like never before for ice and snow. The design of this next-generation studded Hakkapeliitta tyre is based on the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 that was introduced in 2009. This multiple test winner holds a world record in its field: over 30 test wins in car magazines between 2009 and 2012.

With Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8, the new Eco Stud 8 Concept improves safety under extreme conditions and controlled behaviour. It provides superior acceleration and braking, plus top class maneuverability and comfort, including a new-generation anchor stud, a flange design that reduces stud impact, and the Eco Stud cushion that is already used on previous Hakkapeliitta winter tyres, which improves the operation of the stud and further softens road contact. By this way, road wear has been reduced significantly, while grip has been improved and tyre noise reduced.

Nokian Winter Tyres Fastest on Ice: New World Record 335.713 km/h

Standard Nokian winter tyres achieved a new Guinness World Record with a top speed of 335.713 km/h on ice with a car and are the fastest.
Nokian Tyres has over 75 years of experience with tyres for extreme weather. Safety and eco-friendliness are paramount. This is why the Finns continuously work on reducing rolling resistance and, at the same time, the fuel consumption of their tyres, and ensure low-pollution manufacturing. Only purified, low-aromatic oils are used for the production of Nokian winter tyres.

Nokian WR winter tyres achieve top ratings on the tyre label

The new EU tyre labelling system makes it easier for drivers to compare different tyres. Nokian WR winter tyres achieve top ratings on the tyre label in comparison with the premium competitors. But the three tyre label criteria of wet grip, fuel consumption and noise level are far from sufficient, especially for the assessment of winter tyres. The way the winter tyre behaves on snow, ice and slush is especially crucial for safety, but the tyre label does not rate these criteria. Nor does the tyre label give any information about aquaplaning protection, durability or mileage. Drivers should therefore inform themselves through the test reports in car magazines, knowledgeable tyre dealers and tyre manufacturers.

Nokian tyres are available from local tyre service companies, also as complete wheels on rims. At a groove depth down to 4 millimeters the winter tyres should be replaced.
