Our seven goals for sustainable development

Our seven goals for sustainable development

In 2018 we determined seven SDG’s out of the 17 defined by the UN. These goals provide a tool to examine sustainable business in the long term.

In 2015, the United Nations published 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030 to address the global challenges that we face all around the world. They are created to promote prosperity while protecting the environment.

In 2018, we determined 7 SDG’s, which are important for Nokian Tyres. These seven sustainability development goals provide a tool to examine sustainable business in the long term.

3 Good health and well-being

By 2030, substantially reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air, water and soil pollution and contamination.

We improve road safety through continuous development of wet and ice grip.

We were the first in our business to stop the use of high-aromatic oils.

Our LTIF injury frequency was 4.7 in 2023.

5 Gender equality

End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere. Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making.

We have updated our Code of Conduct and do regular audits to ensure our policies are followed in the supply chain as well.

8 Decent work and economic growth

Protect labor rights and promote safe and secure working environments for all workers, including migrant workers, in particular women migrants, and those in precarious employment.

We achieved the goal of auditing all sustainability high-risk suppliers in 2023.

9 Sustainable industry, innovation and infrastructure

By 2030, upgrade infrastructure and retrofit industries to make them sustainable, with increased resource-use efficiency and greater adoption of clean and environmentally sound technologies and industrial processes.

Our goal is to increase the share of recycled or renewable raw materials in tires to 50% by 2030.

11 Sustainable cities and communities

By 2030, provide access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all, improving road safety.

By 2030, reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management.

We improve road safety by producing tires with enhanced wet grip and handling.

12 Responsible consumption

By 2030, achieve the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources.

By 2030, ensure that people everywhere have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature.

By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation.

Almost 100% of used tires are recycled in the Nordic countries and around 95% in Europe.

In 2023, 100% of all tire production waste was recycled or utilized.

13 Climate action

Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries.

Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.

Our ambitious Science Based Targets were approved in May 2020. We are committed to Net Zero by 2050.
